PODS vs. U-Pack: which moving container is best for your move? This is a tough question for many people. There are many factors to look at before making your decision. The good news is that PODS and U-Pack are two of the most popular companies for moving with containers. We’ve broken down everything you need to know about each of the companies below to help you make the best decision for your upcoming move!

ABF’s U-Pack ReloCubes

How does U-Pack work:

It is important to know is that U-Pack ReloCubes are intended for long distance moves, not local moves. First U-Pack comes to your house and drops off the container at the front door, and the customer has three days to load the moving container with all of their inventory. Once that is done, simply call U-Pack and they come pick the moving container from your front yard and begin driving it to the customers destination. U-Pack says the average transit time is about two to five days, but if you are moving across the country, it can be expected to arrive a little later depending on the route and other possible weather conditions.

Pros

  • Customers are not required to pay an upfront deposit on their moving containers.

Cons

  • Customer must load their inventory into the moving container themselves.
  • Their moving containers are not climate controlled.
  • Their trucks do not have air suspension.
  • Many people have claimed damaged items upon delivery.

A much safer alternative to transporting your household goods is hiring professional full-service movers!

Sizes

The inside of each ReloCube measures 70” x 82” x 93” and is capable of holding up to 2,500 pounds – or the equivalent to about a one bedroom fully furnished. To help figure out exactly how many containers you’ll need for your next move, U-Pack even provides a super convenient Moving Space Estimator tool!

Cost

HireAHelper’s Moving Container Price & Review Comparison chart states that the average cost of a long distance move using U-Pack ReloCube moving containers is $2,380. Pricing for ReloCubes is based on a per container/per 30-day period basis.

PODS

How does PODS work

Unlike U-Pack, PODS moving containers are intended for both local and long-distance moves. PODS will come drop off the container at your front door, and then you have a much time as needed to fill up the container with your belongings. When you’re ready, PODS will then come back to pick up the container and begin transporting it to the requested destination.

Sizes

PODS have multiple sizing options for their moving containers. They offer three sizes: 7 ft., 12 ft., and 16 ft.

Pros

  • Intended for local and long-distance moves.
  • Multiple sizing options to choose from.
  • Flexibility for loading time.

Cons

  • Customer must load their inventory into the moving container themselves.
  • Their PODS are not climate controlled.
  • Their trucks do not have air suspension.
  • Customer must pay for each day they use the container.
  • Many people have claimed damaged items upon delivery.

Again, a much safer alternative to transporting your household goods is hiring professional full-service movers!

Cost

According to HireAHelper’s Moving Container Price & Review Comparison chart, the average cost of a long distance move using a PODS moving container is about $3,339. This of course can depend on a variety of factors such as the time of year, availability, as well as the route or distance the moving containers will be transported.

Unlike U-Pack, PODS, and most other moving container options, full-service moving companies have professional workmen take care of all the hard work for you! While some people say they trust themselves more to load and unload their items rather than letting somebody else do it, it is important to remember that they are professionals! These movers handle thousands of pieces of furniture and boxes, and perform hundreds to thousands of moves each year. Most full-service movers also provide blanket and pad wrapping of all standard furniture items in order to prevent scratches, dents, and damaged. It is without a doubt that they have some pretty good experience in packing all types of items in the most efficient way possinble.

Not only are you able to save time and hard work by letting the professionals handle it, but in many cases, it is also much more affordable! This is because you are not paying for any additional space that your items do not fill up on the truck. Whatever amount of space you use is what you pay for.
